On October 1, 1991 the Coast Guard Cutter STORIS would receive her coronation. On that day the Coast Guard Cutter FIR was decommissioned making the STORIS the Oldest Commissioned Cutter in active service.  Because of this distinction, she was allowed to have her hull letters in gold and would be called the "Queen of the Fleet".

In the fall of 1992 at the age of 50 and as an ambassador of goodwill, the STORIS would make a port call at Petropavlovsk on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula.  The historic event would be the first foreign military vessel to enter that port in 138 years.  On November 16, 1992 the STORIS would officially become the Cutter with the longest service in the Bering Sea, eclipsing the Revenue Cutter BEAR who had served 44 years and two months.  The STORIS would end up serving 58 years and four months in the Bering Sea--the current record.
